I have a long list of projects for all around the house, and I jump around depending on what I’m in the mood to do. While the variety is fun, this approach means that every room in the house is unfinished. In an attempt to have one room completely finished, I’ve decided to narrow my focus and work mainly on my bedroom.

One major task is to cover the popcorn ceiling. In my dressing room, I used
paintable textured wallpaper to replicate a tin ceiling. I love the end result, but it's not easy to wallpaper a ceiling by oneself. For the bedroom, I’ve decided to try glue-up tiles. They were pricey when I first investigated them some time ago, but now they are easily available online and more reasonable in price. The hard part will be choosing a design.
If I scrape off the popcorn texture, I can use faux metal tiles made of PVC. These cost about $10 per 24" x 24" tile.
Another option is styrofoam tiles, which can be glued directly over the popcorn. Each tile is 20" x 20" and costs around $4 (white) to $10 (painted).
As my bedroom has a purple, black and white color scheme and the walls are fairly dark, I think white will be my best option. I could paint some color onto all the tiles, though that might be too “busy” for my small room. There is also the option of painting a few of the tiles black as an accent.

So many choices! Can't decide...
What do you guys think?
I love the idea of wall tiles! But most of your photos are showing up as unreadable :/
ReplyDeleteI can see the photos. To glue up foam tiles and not having to scrap off the popcorn sounds time saving and no mess. Beautiful designs on the tiles. I have to get out more! LOL!
ReplyDeleteHoly smokes! These are SO awesome!!! I can't believe they aren't metal! SOoooo cool. gee, I don't know; I like the idea of having silver ... I love silver with purple. It's so much more dramatic than white.
ReplyDeleteI painted my last bedroom a dark magenta with a metallic purple ceiling. Even though the purple was fairly reflective, it immediately became an absolute cave. While this was nice for sleeping, it was difficult for other things, like reading or getting dressed or seeing. Caveat emptor (renovator?).
ReplyDeleteWell I had to look up 'popcorn ceiling'! Never heard the term before. In the UK, Artex was widely used for a textured ceiling finish.
ReplyDeleteNow, "Styrofoam"... Is that expanded polystyrene?
(Hah, two nations divided by a common language! *LOL*)
A lot of expanded polystyrene has been used in my house in thin sheet form on the walls and tiles on the ceiling. I'm finding that it's not so easy to scrape off, and the plaster below is very unstable. Undoubtedly that's why so much of the stuff has been used everywhere - to create a smooth finish for papering/painting... but without having had to replaster.
Well I did get one room professionally plastered and decorated when I had to make an insurance claim for water damage following a pipe burst. The guy was scraping away at the polystyrene uttering oaths of contempt. He said that as well as being the "material of Satan", it was also a fire hazard and produced noxious fumes when burnt (presumably, "the breath of Satan"). I don't know if its substantially worse than many other building materials would be if you set them on fire.
You mentioned in the earlier blog post about the potential asbestos issue with popcorn ceilings so you must know yours are OK. But how difficult is it to scrape that stuff off? It looks like it could be a BIG job. It would be a lot simpler to simply cover them with the Styrofoam tiles and they seem to be quite a lot cheaper than the PVC.
All the patterns you've suggested are nice. As for colour... Just as you say with dark walls, a white ceiling, or maybe the antique silver. The antique copper is lovely, as is the black, but it might just be a bit too much with the dark walls.
Orlando.
Wow. Such a good idea. I think any of the colors will look great. I scraped the popcorn off the ceilings in our first house. It was a nightmare. Save yourself the trouble and glue on the styrofoam. just my two cents. :)
ReplyDeleteSo many choices!! I said yes to that second one in black but when you started to talk about white I would have chosen the first one that is white. But it is very difficult. It's depending on what feeling you want of the room. I can imagine how it could look like when youre putting on wallpapers on the ceiling ;) you've must spoken a few curses.
ReplyDeleteWow, these are lovely. I'm really tempted to see if I can find a UK website that does something similar to the antique copper Styrofoam tiles for my ceiling!
ReplyDeleteI think any of those white designs would look great in your room (which looks awesome btw). I especially like R32.
Those are so cool! When Raven and I have a place where we can change the decor, we'll have to think about those. They look really good for plastic! I like the ceiling tiles with the gold decor - you could possibly replicate that with either black, purple or silver (I'd say silver to keep it light, but black would have the best contrast effect and be most in keeping with the rest of the decor)
ReplyDeleteI missed the bit about them being styrofoam... I can't stand the stuff- it's completely irrational... I'll have to go for PVC
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'd take the time to get rid of the popcorn anyway--regardless of what tiles you choose. However, I would run with the R32, the one that looks great with painted accents. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteWow - I had a vague idea that these were out there, but not that there were so many amazing options!! When you get back into project mode, you really do it big time. :) White or light silver tone would be safe options. I can't stand a room that eats all of the light. You have a light-colored floor too, which helps a lot! We just finished laying down laminate in a dark cherry color in our bedroom, and even with light walls we were surprised how much darker the room became.
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna vote for R220, because I like everything just about ornate as I can get it. ;)
Thank you all for your comments. I'm sorry I can't reply individually. You have offered so much great feedback! I really appreciate it. Now I'm even more excited about this project!
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of silver, either solid or as painted accents. I think I'm going to order a few sample tiles. Things can look very different once you get them in a room. I am very curious to see and feel the actual tiles. :)
The antique silver PVC is gorgeous! Who knew this stuff existed? Removing the popcorn sounds very messy. Best make sure there's no asbestos or weird stuff like that. The tiles will be gorgeous and lovely to stare at as you fall asleep.
ReplyDeletei would like the black ones for every room please XD
ReplyDeleteglad i'm not working on walls/floor/permanent things yet because i know i wont live in this flat longer than until 2014 haha
great ideas as always!
These are amazing. I live in an area where a lot of the old row homes had tin ceilings. Such a good look. I like the white tiles or the silver.
ReplyDeleteI think white overall is best but I really like the ones in the 3rd picture from bottom with the bronze accents :)
